Arizona Hike 2007.
In June our group of 16, 11 youth and 5 mentors hiked down the Havasupai Falls trail in the Grand Canyon. Last year we had just 4 youth on our initial trip. We were able to almost triple the number of youth this summer. This trip is often met with much anticipation, excitement and anxiousness. The unknown can be a scary thing at times. However, conquering those unknowns in the wilderness builds momentum and confidence that they (the youth) can conquer their insecurities and unknowns in their everyday life as well. This trip often offers a lot of "firsts" for youth. Their first time to fly (actually we had a mentor that had never flown before as well!), their first glimpse in awe of the Grand Canyon, their first jump off a cliff, and their first opportunity to see that they have been given the power to move beyond their current circumstances. If they can hike10 miles down the Grand Canyon and back up again, then they are now realizing they can accomplish many more things they thought they couldn't do. Now that the school year has started, we have been notified by certain school officials that this life experience has completely changed one particular student's outlook on himself, life and others in a very positive way. That's our goal!
